Music To My Brain: Too Relatable
It’s no secret that I love music. There is something so powerful about lyrics, especially when they resonate with something that you have gone through.
I find songs about mental health especially powerful. I think sometimes we forget that celebrities are human too, they have hurts and struggles just like all of us. I have so much respect for artists that release music about mental health. That’s why I created this Music To My Brain series. Check out the last post in the series here.
You know that feeling when you’re listening to a song for the first time and you feel like the artist looked inside your mind to write that song? That’s how I felt with each of these songs. Some even moved me to tears because I related so much. It’s a powerful thing to feel seen through lyrics. See if you get that experience with any of these songs that feel all too relatable.
Happy by NF
“The truth is, I need help, but I just can’t imagine who I’d be if I was happy.”
These lyrics from Happy by NF are hauntingly beautiful. It’s a statement that I’ve pondered myself a lot. So when I heard it in a song I instantly connected to it. When you’ve spent so long in a dark place it’s hard to imagine what happiness feels like and looks like. Through therapy and a lot of reflection and work I’ve realized that happiness is possible.
Fine by Kyle Hume
“Yeah I’m fine, Well maybe I’m not and I just need to tell someone I’m not alright”
This is one of the many songs on this list that stopped me in the middle of my TikTok scroll. You know that feeling when the For You Page feels a little too personal? I was feeling really overwhelmed and Fine popped up to remind me that I’m not alone and that everything will be okay.
Self Love Avery Anna
“What it must be like to be anybody else but me”
As much as I love the idea of self love, I can’t deny that it’s hard to practice sometimes. Self Love makes me feel seen, heard, and understood when it comes to the topic of self love. I know one day I’ll get there, but it’s nice to have a theme song for how I’m feeling right now.
Good Not Great by JORDY
“Oh, half these days, I can’t tell if I’m alright, just getting by, or doing fine”
This is one of those songs that can be a little deceiving. The beat sounds chill and happy but the lyrics say something else. I like having these types of songs on my Happy playlist though because it serves two purposes. If I just need a fun beat to get my mind off things, Good Not Great works, and if I’m in the mood to be introspective and dive into the lyrics it’s great for that as well.
Nobody Hates You by Jessia
“We never bought a ticket to this chaos in our minds, yeah”
If you want to listen to a song that feels like a hug, this is it. It’s full of touching lyrics and will hopefully have you feeling a little better by the end of it. I know it always makes me feel appreciated and loved when I listen to Nobody Hates You.
talk to myself by BLÜ EYES
“Yeah, if I talked to everybody else how I talk to myself then I don’t think I’d have any friends”
Talk to myself is a newer song that I found, but as soon as I heard it I knew I needed it on this list. The saying “you are your own worst critic” is especially true for those with mental health issues because we are trapped in our mind even more than others are. Whenever I catch myself going down a negative thought spiral I try to think of it like I’m talking to someone I know. That can usually get me to stop.
Future Self by David Archuleta
“All these shadows trying to catch me, I’m surviving for my future self”
I absolutely love this song. I’m all about bettering myself for my future self, so Future Self really speaks to me. I wanted to include it here to end on a positive note.
These are some of the songs you’ll find on my Too Relatable Spotify playlist. I’d love to know what songs you heard for the first time and related to instantly! Were any of them on this list? Let me know in the comments.
